Experience teaches the same lesson repeatedly until it is taken seriously. In IT, the lesson is this: the money saved in the wrong place does not stay saved.

A business running on hardware that was built down to a price, assembled with components chosen for margin rather than reliability, and shipped from a factory that has never heard of the company whose name is printed on the box, is not a business that has made a smart procurement decision. It is a business that has deferred a cost it will pay later, with interest, in the form of downtime, data loss, remediation, and the slow accumulation of security incidents that appear in the daily news as credential dumps on the dark web, breached customer records, and operational failures that nobody saw coming because nobody was looking at the foundation.

The data breach statistics are not abstract. They are published every day, and the pattern in them is consistent. The organizations that appear in those reports are not exclusively the ones that were unlucky. They are disproportionately the ones that treated their infrastructure as a cost to be minimized rather than a capability to be built.

A secure email infrastructure costs money. It costs less than a single incident involving compromised correspondence.
